John Stowell was the master-teacher for guitarists when I first attended the Stanford Jazz Workshop. I remember that "Georgia on My Mind" was about the only ballad I could handle. Nevertheless, his audition assessment was constructive and encouraging and those characteristics have only grown with time. We have played and recorded together occasionally in the years since.
John is a masterful, original musician.
Today we recorded this interpretation of George Gershwin's "Embraceable You." It's John's arrangement. I've included the lyrics, though we played quite a free interpretation. (Carole March Vito, Joanie Pallatto, and Jenna Mammina can sing along!)
This performance was once-through, no overdubs, no headphones. We hope you enjoy it.
Embraceable You | George Gershwin
Embrace me, my sweet embraceable you
Embrace me, you irreplaceable you
Just one look at you
My heart grew tipsy in me
You and you alone
Bring out the gypsy in me
I love all the many charms about you
Above all, I want these arms about you
Don't be a naughty baby
Come to papa, come to papa do
My sweet embraceable you
