about
Beethoven's Ode to Joy
This arrangement was in the setlists of my jazz duos, trios, and quartets for about four years before settling on the harmony, tempo, and other elements you hear in this recording.
I swear that all my bandmates' solos--and mine too--were more compositional on this piece than what I recall when we played typical jazz standards or material from the Great American Songbook.
I don't recall what made "Ode to Joy" seem agreeable to receive a jazz waltz format, some reharmonization, and a little melodic improvisation before returning to the main theme. But, that's what you'll hear. I hope you have as much fun listening as I had playing!
